Description

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector born parasitic disease due to Leishmania donovani (L.donovani) and nearly always fatal when untreated. In 2005 the Indian subcontinent launched a joint VL elimination initiative to reduce VL incidence to less than one case per 10,000 on district level by 2020, through case management and vector control. Nepal has reached this target since 2012, but many challenges still threaten the sustainability of this success. We hypothesize that sustainable VL elimination requires enhanced epidemiological surveillance, proper monitoring of control efforts and independent ascertainment of progress towards elimination. With this research project we aim to address the specific research questions related to surveillance in the peri-elimination phase. We will work in close collaboration with leading research institutes in tropical medicine in Europe, India and Nepal. We will exploit innovative diagnostic, epidemiological and entomological tools to evaluate the impact of VL control measures employed in the past decade in Nepal and India.
