Research expertise

Gorik Ooms is a human rights lawyer. He joined the Department of Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium, in 2008. Since 2010, he is adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, USA.

Gorik Ooms graduated as a lawyer from the University of Leuven in 1989. During most of his professional career he worked with Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium.

After being head of mission for Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium in Burundi and Mozambique, he became the executive director of Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium in 2004. In March 2008, he obtained his Ph.D. title in Medical Sciences from the University of Ghent, for his thesis on the subject: “The right to health and the sustainability of healthcare: Why a new global health aid paradigm is needed.”
