Introduction

The Unit of Veterinary Epidemiology is mainly involved in quantitative epidemiology, including pathogen transmission simulation modelling (from differential equation models to agent-based models), risk analysis and statistical analysis, both in frequentist and Bayesian frameworks, of experimental and observational data, including analysis of results of multi-test diagnostics. This unit’s research activities range from omics over transmission dynamics to eco-epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens.

The Unit is led by Dirk Berkvens.

 

Main research topics

  • Eco-epidemiology of Rift Valley fever in East Africa: spatio-temporal analysis and modelling of data generated by transversal and longitudinal surveys on the inter-epidemic transmission of the virus in mammalian and human hosts and the influence of different vector species on transmission dynamics.
  • Eco-epidemiology of brucellosis in the tropics: analysis and modelling of data on the brucellosis burden in domestic animals in order to define optimum control strategies in different livestock settings in the tropics; special attention goes to the correct interpretation of diagnostic test results.
  • Eco-epidemiology of canine leishmaniasis in the North Africa: analysis and modelling of data obtained from surveys in different ecological zones in Algeria.
  • Eco-epidemiology of taeniasis/cysticercosis: analysis and modelling of data generated by surveillance and control programmes in various countries.
