Organisation profile

The Unit of Malariology, led by Prof Anna Rosanas-Urgell, conducts research on human malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax parasites. Our projects are conducted in collaboration with partner Institutions in Peru, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Mozambique and Papua New Guinea.

The Unit focuses its research activities in three main lines. First, we investigate the factors that contribute to the increased risk of infection, disease and transmission in populations with varying transmission intensity. Second, through therapeutic efficacy studies, parasite culture and population genetic studies, we monitor the emergence and spread of drug resistant parasites and investigate new mechanisms of resistance. Finally, we aim to reveal host-parasite interactions involved in the process of P. vivax reticulocyte invasion.
